Sweet Potato Pie with Gingersnap-Pecan Crust

When it comes to holiday dinners, I tend to pass on the pumpkin pie. Yet, if sweet potato pie is involved, well, that’s a whole ‘nother story. Around here, the sweet potatoes always end up as a side. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But wouldn’t it be nice if for a change sweet potatoes could make an appearance at dessert? That’s where this pie comes in. So when the #SundaySupper crew floated the idea of a #BakeForACure event to raise cancer awareness and then when Chantal offered to sponsor, generously providing a number of us with its new “Easy As Pie” dish, well, that was all the incentive I needed to create this special dessert.

Chicken Roasted with White Wine #SundaySupper

Chicken Roasted with White Wine

What does comfort food mean to you? For some, the phrase comfort food conjures up images of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, chicken noodle soup, just to name a few. For me it’s this roasted chicken. But comfort food is more about emotions than a specific recipe–it’s about nostalgia… it’s about your favorite aunt whose kitchen always smelled of cinnamon rolls … it’s about that fried chicken your mom made every year for your birthday…. comfort food is about cherished memories, and that steaming bowl of chicken noodle is a place to escape the stresses of the world while it keeps you cozy and warm like a plush blanket on a cold winter’s day.

Drunken Pumpkin Bread

Are there no brakes on this thing? Seriously, it’s October already? Here we are, racing full speed ahead into the holidays. <sigh> Let’s pause for a moment to enjoy the splendor of fall, raking up crackly red and orange leaves, that crisp bite in the air, crocheted scarves, cozy knit sweaters, and a cup of hot cider.

Award Winning Split Pea Soup with Gouda Crostini

by Anne Papina on September 30, 2012

Split Pea Soup with Gouda Crostini

San Francisco may be famous for its fog, but locally, Daly City and Pacifica are thought to have SF beat. Of course, in the fall, all bets are off as we head into our most summery time of the year. For the last 25+ years, Pacifica has embraced its fogginess with the Pacific Coast Fog Festival, complete with arts and crafts, live music, and even a parade spotlighting rust adorned jalopies. And several years back, they added a cooking competition for … (drum roll please) … split pea soup. Presented here today is the winner of the inaugural event. This was my first cook-off, and little did they know, split pea is the one soup I had pretty much perfected. It was time to see whether it could stand up to competition, and it did.

Harvest Rice with Apples and Pecans #SundaySupper

by Anne Papina on September 23, 2012

Harvest Rice w/Apples and Pecans | Webicurean

This weekend marks fall’s official kickoff, but unofficially, over the last two weeks, that cold bite has been here every morning, urging me to remain tucked within the snuggly folds of a warm bed. Oddly enough, San Francisco doesn’t have “seasons” in the traditional sense. In fact, if anything, fall is usually our summer, or as we call it, Indian Summer, but this September there’s definitely a nip in the air. Despite the chilliness today, the next few weeks are likely to bring us some scorchers. Of course, the weather hardly matters here as we roll into my favorite time of year. To celebrate the arrival of fall, the #SundaySupper crew is hosting an Autumn Apple Party, so in addition to my Harvest Rice, you’ll find links to a bushelful of apple recipes below.

Yummy Bars

Yummy Bars | Webicurean

As much as I relish my time in the kitchen–that methodical and soothing rhythm unfolding as you work a masterpiece–sometimes the moment calls for something semi-homemade. This is one of those moments. I wanted to prepare a sweet treat this week, and a quick stroll down memory lane brought me to the “famous” Yummy Bars.

potato salad with bacon and peas

Have I ever mentioned I’m a big fan of potatoes? Well, it’s true. So when tasked with bringing a dish to this week’s virtual tailgate party–hosted by none other than the #SundaySupper crew–the first thing that came to mind was potato salad. I know, I know, potato salad has been done all over the place, but trust me, not like this!

Mom’s Savory Pork ‘n’ Beans #SundaySupper

by Anne Papina on September 2, 2012

savory pork and beans

It all began with a leftover ham bone and a hungry husband. At least that’s how my mom tells it. My dad suggested cooking the ham bone with some beans, and my mom built this dish around it. The rest, I guess, is history. This week my friends in the #SundaySupper group are hosting a virtual cookout to celebrate Labor Day. What better dish to bring than my Mom’s Savory Pork ‘n’ Beans?

Pasta with Creamy Kale Pesto #SundaySupper

by Anne Papina on August 26, 2012

Creamy Kale Pesto

Good food doesn’t need to be complicated. Take, for example, pesto. I have to admit, I often find myself purchasing the pre-made stuff, yet homemade sauce literally takes minutes to prepare. Why do I do that? For some, I know, that fear of making a sauce from scratch, especially on a weeknight, often seems out of reach. For me it’s a matter of laziness, but whenever I make it from scratch, I’m reminded of how simple and oh so much better it is. This week, Webicurean is pleased to participate in the #SundaySupper Back to School event, providing 30 minute options for your busy weeknights. This creamy kale pesto is a great example.

Homemade Limoncino (Limoncello)

by Anne Papina on August 19, 2012

Limoncello

After reading the The Lost Ravioli Recipes of Hoboken, I fell in love with the idea of traveling to Italy. To Sestri Levante, to be exact. To visit mia famiglia. To bring back the recipes passed down for generations, just like Laura Schenone had done, there along the Italian Riviera. As it turned out, my sister, along with three of my cousins, were already planning this pilgrimage. In fact, for at least part of the trip, they planned to stay at the cousins’ resort in Riva Trigoso. My opportunity had arrived, even if indirectly! Please, I begged, bring me recipes from the old country. But, alas, those recipes remain a safely guarded Ligurian treasure.
